Is EAS the right choice for my child?
Things to consider before applying to EAS.
Leaving your neighborhood school to participate in a 4-year middle school is a major decision for families. Here are important things to consider before applying to EAS:

Expectations of EAS students

  1. Keep student planner, binder, and school supplies organized and current.
  2. Keep up with homework in all classes (average time spent on homework is about 1.5 hours per night – sometimes more; sometimes a little less.)
  3. Manage a schedule that varies from day to day with multiple teachers and classes.
  4. Maintain a 3.0 in all subject areas. (For additional grading information, see "Assessment" under Academics in the blue navigation bar to the left.)
  5. Read both fiction and informational materials extensively.
  6. Write effective paragraphs and compositions in all classes.
  7. Know and apply basic math facts and computational skills in the process of problem-solving.
  8. Engage in a rigorous science program, including environmental science and outdoor projects.
  9. Develop art skills in various media through a challenging art program.
  10. Participate in fitness class instruction and activities.
  11. Actively participate and develop skills in four years of Spanish instruction.
  12. Participate responsibly in group projects as a productive team member and develop leadership skills.
  13. Actively and responsibly participate in 3 week-long school excursions each year.
  14. Actively and responsibly participate in 3 Community Stewardship sessions per year.

Facts about EAS and Student/Family Commitment

  1. Students who enroll at EAS are making at least a 3-year commitment. EAS is not a 1-year placement on the way to another school of choice. The reason for this 3 year commitment is that the curriculum at EAS is organized by theme instead of grade level. Therefore, in order to complete all of the subject area critical content expected of a student in LWSD by the end of 8th grade, students need to complete 6th through 8th grade at EAS. 9th grade curriculum follows district standards, further building upon content learned in grades 6th through 8th, and provides the opportunity for 9th grade students to further develop leadership skills and prepare for a successful transition to high school.
  2. EAS is subject to the same student-teacher ratio as other LWSD schools. Class sizes range from some smaller math and Spanish classes to 36 students in the three 6th-8th grade Integrated Studies classes.
  3. Transportation to EAS is the responsibility of the parents. Currently LWSD provides a shuttle bus from the Redmond area for a fee.
  4. Students will make friends with other EAS students across the district and may request transportation from parents to engage socially or work on school projects with their new friends.
  5. There are extra costs associated with attending EAS to cover projects, excursions, and special school purchases. These expenses include an expected $200 contribution per year per child. (For more information, please refer to “EAS Student and Family Expenses” under Admissions in the blue navigation bar to the left).
  6. All EAS families are expected to fulfill a Family Participation Commitment of 25 hours per year. Volunteer driving and assisting with excursions, stewardship projects, and the Wednesday Elective program during the school day are the areas needing the most volunteer involvement of parents.
  7. Placement at EAS is determined by a blind lottery. In accordance with district policies, siblings do not have preference in the admission lottery. Families already enrolled in the LWSD have lottery priority.
  8. Special Services for EAS students are limited. The EAS schedule, field studies, and week-long trips limit the availability of daily services students can receive from the Finn Hill Jr. High Special Services team. Students on an IEP for writing or math can receive services at Finn Hill instead of taking Spanish.
  9. As part of the application process, students and parents must sign an EAS Student and Family Commitment (see below) agreeing to specific academic and family participation expectations. Students and families who do not fulfill their commitment may not retain a place at EAS for the following school year.
  10. EAS challenges students to become involved citizens in their community – and parents are welcome, too!

EAS Student and Family Commitment

If my child is admitted to EAS through the lottery process, our family
agrees to the following:

Student Commitment
I will apply myself to my studies in all of my classes while attending
EAS.  When needed I will take steps to improve my skills and study
habits.I understand that participation on EAS trips, electives, and service
projects requires a 3.0 (B) grade average, consistent attendance, and
appropriate behavior.

Parent / Family Commitment
We understand that the cost of EAS excursions and special programs
requires family support in addition to grants and funding obtained by the
teachers.  We agree to the $200 per student per year contribution in lieu
of other fundraisers at EAS and will meet our 25 hour per year
volunteer
commitment or cash payment for unfulfilled hours.

We will support our child's academic learning in all classes and work with
the teachers as needed to address areas for improvement.
