Sixth Grade Math - An Introduction to CMP 6

A focus on fractions, statistics, geometry of angles, and more

In sixth grade, students continue working on understanding our number system by mastering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. The focus of the year is becoming fluent at moving between fractions, decimals and percents by the end of the school year. It is important that students understand the meaning behind fraction computation. Two of the units -- Bits and Pieces I, Bits and Pieces II -- focus on these concepts.

CMP 6 also covers data and statistics, in which students will collect and evaluate data using “measures of center” and through visual representation (graphs). It includes geometry of angles, area and perimeter of rectangles and circles, and transformations of figures on coordinate grids (what happens to the coordinates of the points when you rotate a figure 90˚ on a grid). Other topics include volume and surface area of rectangular prisms, and probability.

Computational fluency in sixth grade
The district has outlined specific goals for computational fluency for sixth grade: Sixth Grade Computation Strategies

Units: CMP 6 is divided into eight consecutive units. For each unit, you will find a link to the parent letter and materials for the unit, which outlines the unit goals and important concepts. Links to other resources for parents are also listed.
