In sixth grade, students continue working on understanding our number system by mastering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions. The focus of the year is becoming fluent at moving between fractions, decimals and percents by the end of the school year. It is important that students understand the meaning behind fraction computation. The first three units – Bits and Pieces I, II, and III – focus on fractions, decimals, and percents. Students learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals.
Students also explore probability (How Likely Is It?); representing simple algebraic relationships through tables, graphs, and expressions (Variables and Patterns), and the geometry of circles (area and circumference) and three dimensional figures (volume and surface area).
Computational fluency in sixth grade
The district has outlined specific goals for computational fluency for sixth grade: Sixth Grade Computation Strategies
Units: For each unit, you will find a link to the parent letter and materials for the unit, which outlines the unit goals and important concepts. Links to other resources for parents are also listed.
