Shapes and Designs is the first unit in the Connected Mathematics geometry strand. The focus is on polygons and angles. After all of the polygon and geometry work that students did in fifth grade, classes will only work on Investigation 2, angle measurements and parallel lines, and Investigation 3, angles in polygons. For additional review, students get to play a game called “the quadrilateral game” that reinforces topics from both fifth and sixth grade.
At the end of this unit, students will spend a week graphing coordinates on a coordinate grid system to create polygons and learn how various transformations affect these coordinates, including translations (slides), reflections (flips) and rotations (turns).
