Throughout first grade, students work on developing strategies for accurately counting larger groups, they work with the important idea that objects can be grouped and regrouped in different ways. The addition and subtraction work of first grade focuses on making sense of these operations, practicing adding and subtracting single-digit numbers. They solve addition and subtraction story problems. By the end of the year, first graders will count on to combine two small quantities and use combinations they know to solve other problems
In geometry, first graders describe, sort, and compare geometric shapes. Children also sort groups of objects, describing and classifying groups. They learn to represent data with pictures. First graders work with measurement. They learn to measure objects using units and work on time and money concepts. Mathematics work in first grade is foundational.
Changes for the 2009-2010 School Year
Some of the units listed below are supplemented with materials from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and Bridges in Mathematics to meet curricular gaps caused by changes in the State of Washington math standards. New curricula that strongly match the new standards are being piloted this year and are expected to be adopted and implemented in the fall of 2010.
