Stretching and Shrinking
Scale and proportion

In Stretching and Shrinking, students will use the properties of similar figures to explore enlargements, and reductions, like those made on copy machines. They extend their understanding to estimate the height of real objects, such as trees and buildings, and the distance across large areas, such as lakes.

Students are faced with problems that help them begin to reason proportionally. The goal of this unit is for students to know how to create similar figures, how to prove whether two figures are similar and to predict relationships between areas and lengths for two similar figures.

For an in depth explanation of goals, specific questions to ask your students and examples of core concepts from unit, go to Stretching and Shrinking.
