Choice Schools Fair Eliminated to Save Parents Time
In the past, families of fifth and sixth graders came to the annual Choice Schools Fair to pick up information regarding each Choice school’s information night. In addition, families applying to a Choice School are required to attend that school’s information night to hear about school’s programs and pick up applications. Therefore, the Fair was an added step in the process of seeking information about school options beginning in sixth or seventh grade. This year, the district examined procedures around Choice School applications and determined that we would streamline the processes for families by eliminating the Fair. More…

Rose Hill Elementary Artwork on Display at Kirkland Library
The work of Rose Hill Elementary (RHE) artists will be on display at the Kirkland Library beginning Monday, December 1, through the end of December. These works represent projects funded by a 2008-2009 Classroom Enrichment Grant from the Lake Washington Schools Foundation to provide a series of art lessons to all fourth, fifth and sixth graders at RHE. Led by Christopher Banks, para-educator and artist, each lesson presents the work of an important artist with an emphasis on recognizing and understanding the basic elements of their art: line, color, shape, and texture as well as technique and media. Following the lesson, students create their own interpretations in that style, using a similar technique and quality art materials.

The artworks on display include those by:

  1. Ms. Jarta’s fourth grade class — Andy Warhol-themed, Pop Art hand-stenciled “print” paintings, using primary and neon tempera colors on white tag board.
  2. Ms. McKinney’s sixth grade class — Marc Chagall-themed, symbolic paintings using watercolor and charcoal on rag paper.
Drop by during the month of December and enjoy the exciting, beautiful work of our young artists.

Schools Place in Governor’s Health Bowl School Challenge
Three LWSD schools placed in the top 30 in the Governor’s Health Bowl School Challenge, part of the Healthiest State in the Nation Campaign. The School Challenge has Washington citizens, schools and businesses compete to make Washington the healthiest state in the nation. For six weeks, participants log “miles” for the physical activity and nutrition challenge. Miles can be logged for many things: eating healthy, drinking adequate water, any physical activity, etc. One mile is 20 minutes of activity or task completed. This year’s goal was to earn 7.5 million miles of health by November 1. Over 25,000 students and 4,000 parents and school staff participated in the School Challenge. Rose Hill Junior High placed eighth in the middle school/junior high category. Rose Hill Elementary tied for 22nd place and Samantha Smith Elementary tied for 28th place in the elementary category.

Students (from left to right): Michael Pavlov (eighth grade), Michelle Tryon (seventh grade), Amy Harger (seventh grade), and Alexa Dickinson (eighth grade) spent two hours sorting and packaging food to be donated.

Stella Schola Honor Society Students Make Donation to Hopelink
Stella Schola Honor Society students built and then planted a community garden in late August. In early November, students harvested five pounds of fresh produce, mostly Swiss chard and lettuce to donate to Hopelink. The Honor Society also hosted a two-week food drive for Hopelink, with the 90 Stella Schola families bringing in 1030 pounds of canned food and baby supplies to donate. Bryan Athay, a Hopelink employee and former student of Brigitte Tennis, was impressed with the amount of food donated and thanked the school for its generosity to the community.
