Good News from the State Auditor’s Office
The State Auditor has just completed its review of Lake Washington School District. Each year, the Auditor reviews three key items in every school district: 1.) The district’s accountability for public resources and compliance with laws, 2.) The district’s financial statements, and 3.) The district’s federal program compliance (such as special education). Because of the number of records and programs that the auditor must review, they work on-site for approximately four months (typically January through April). All of the documents that they review are from the previous school year (meaning that this year’s audit reviewed items from the 2006-07 school year).

In the exit interview with the auditor’s office, the auditor concluded that we should be very pleased with the results of the audit. The district received no significant audit items or issues. Here is the link to the auditor’s reports: http://www.sao.wa.gov/applications/InternetReportSearch/AuditReportSearch.aspx. From this page, select Lake Washington School District from the “State and Local Government Entities” section, then click on the button that says, “Search Audit Reports.”

First Annual Kids Can Cook Culinary Competition to be Held June 11
Twenty fourth- and fifth-grade students will participate in the first annual Kids Can Cook Elementary Culinary Competition on June 11 from 2-6 p.m. at Redmond Junior High. In March, students throughout the district who were interested were asked to complete a recipe card for their favorite healthy after-school snack. The recipes received were then narrowed down to the top three per school. These final 20 students were then formally invited to the “Cook Off” that will be held on June 11. Students will be preparing their favorite snacks. They will be judged on the following: health-conscious foods; simple, kid-friendly preparation; fun kid-foods; Judge’s Choice; and Best Table Demonstration. Students will work from 2-5 p.m. on preparing the foods, and then parents, students and judges will be able to taste each snack food from 5-6 p.m. All of these finalists will receive a framed plaque, a recipe book of all the finalists’ recipes, a t-shirt, an apron, a chef’s hat, and medals.

Members of the media are cordially invited to attend. Contact Shannon Parthemer or Kathryn Reith for more information.

RHS Student Selected as Seafair Ambassador
Hailey Hargraves from Redmond High School was recently selected as a Seafair Ambassador. Hailey was one of 12 semi-finalists. Next fall she will be participating in a cultural exchange program with ambassadors from Seattle’s sister city, Kobe, Japan. In addition, she will represent the Seattle area in the various Seafair events this summer. Hailey also received a $1,000 scholarship for being selected as an ambassador.
