College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship Winners Named
Four Lake Washington School District students have been announced as winners of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. Officials at each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among Finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. The following students received scholarships from these universities:
- Patrick Gilbery, Juanita High School – Arizona State University
- Ashoat Tevosyan, Redmond High School – University of Washington
- Elizabeth Nelson, Redmond High School – University of Washington
- Ashton Hemphill, Eastlake High School – University of Washington
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. More than 2,800 winners were announced for these awards on May 27, and another 1,900 will be announced in July. This year, 201 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 120 private and 81 public institutions located in 44 states and the District of Columbia.
Lake Washington PTSA Council Announces 2009 Scholarship Awards
The Lake Washington PTSA Council is pleased to announce the talented recipients of our 2009 Scholarship Awards.
These student recipients will each receive a $1,000 college scholarship:

- Allen Liu, Eastlake High School
- Vera Hoang, Lake Washington High School
- Callum Dickson, BEST High School
- Lars Myren, Juanita High School
- Dylan Portelance, Redmond High School
- Ngoc-Khuyen Tran, Redmond High School - Adria Klein Memorial Scholarship
- Elizabeth Tayler, Juanita High School – Dr. L.E. Scarr Scholarship
- Ryan Rae, Juanita High School – Dr. Don Saul Scholarship
- Claire Wilson, Lake Washington High School – Bob Hughes Scholarship: At Large
- Christian Casolary, Eastlake High School – Jay Ellis Scholarship: Music Education
- Jacqueline Vautin, Redmond High School – LWEA/Karen Bates Scholarship
- Kristin Dorr, Eastlake High School – Seattle Foundation Scholarship
- Andrew Marzano, Eastlake High School – Seattle Foundation Scholarship
The following Lake Washington School District Staff members will receive $500 scholarships as well:
- Mariko Lane, Juanita High School
- Melissa Newberry, Audubon Elementary
Students Recognized with 2009 Academic Awareness Awards
Each year, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office presents Academic Awareness Awards to celebrate the personal success stories of formerly truant youth and to recognize those who have helped them return to school. This year, four students from Lake Washington School District will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 28, from noon – 1:20 p.m. at the King County Council Chambers:
- Outstanding Achievement Award Winner: Nolberto Arechiga (Juanita High School)
- Honorable Mention: Eddy Solares (Lake Washington High School)
- Nominations: Bryan Sanchez, Jonathan Saeteurn (Lake Washington High School)
Congratulations also to the BECCA Specialists at both schools who nominated these students for their awards: Mary Jo Bogden, Lake Washington High School and Marcia Chapman, Juanita High School.
