Shape LWSD’s Funding, Future Through Levy/Bond Input
Plan to attend a levy/bond input session or participate through online process
Help shape the future of our schools by giving input on what should be part of the school levy and bond measures on the ballot next February. Options include raising money for facilities and technology capital projects, possible bond measure for new schools and school grade configuration change. Parents, community members, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

  • Oct. 7 – 3:00-4:30 p.m., Redmond Junior High
  • Oct. 7 – 7:00-8:30 p.m., Eastlake High School
  • Oct. 8 – 7:00-8:30 p.m., Redmond High School
  • Oct. 13 – 3:00-4:30 p.m., Kamiakin Jr. High
  • Oct. 13 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m., Juanita High School
  • Oct. 14 – 7:00-8:30 p.m., Lake Washington High School
If you can’t make one of these sessions, go to www.lwsd.org starting October 7 for more information and to provide input via a Web-based system.

Frost Elementary Ribbon-Cutting and Grand Opening – October 8
You are cordially invited to the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony & Grand Opening of Robert Frost Elementary School (11801 NE 140th Street, Kirkland, Wash.). The event will be held on Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m.

Dr. Chip Kimball will be the guest of honor. You can enjoy tours of the school, refreshments and music provided by the Kamiakin Wind Ensemble and the Kamiakin Jazz Band. The public is invited. Please extend this invitation to other Frost friends, alumnae, neighbors and community members!

Shaun Tarantola Named Seahawks Coach of the Week
Shaun Tarantola, the head football coach at Juanita High School, was selected as the Seattle Seahawks Week 2 Coach of the Week. The Seahawks select two coaches statewide, one from 3A/4A and one from 2A and under each week). Shaun will be recognized at an on-field reception before the Seahawks game on December 6. He will also receive: a certificate and hat, $500 for the Football Booster Club account and a $100 personal savings bond.

Juanita High School Student Named Scholar Athlete of the Week
Kris Otterholt, a senior at Juanita High School, was selected as the Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Week™. This award recognizes outstanding student athletes who perform both on the field and in the classroom. His stellar 3.867 GPA combined with his impressive athletic credentials as a 3-sport starter and letter winner for the last three years are truly amazing accomplishments that deserve recognition. As a winner, Kris will receive a $100 scholarship towards his tuition at the institution of his choice in the fall of 2010. He is also eligible for one of two $1000 scholarships awarded to one male and one female Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Year™, who will be selected at an end-of-the-year banquet that will be held for all 36 weekly Scholar Athlete winners.

Eastlake Senior a Semifinalist in the National Achievement® Scholarship Program
Austen Samkange, a senior at Eastlake High School, is one of the 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been named Semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Austen now has an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship® awards, worth a total of $2.6 million, to be offered next spring.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by NMSC, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants. To date, over 29,500 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth $94 million.

Approximately 1,300 Semifinalists are expected to fulfill additional requirements and advance to the Finalist level in the 2010 program. All Achievement Scholar® awardees will be selected from the Finalist group on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
