Preliminary 10th Grade WASL Scores

The Lake Washington School District announced the preliminary results for members of the class of 2009 who took the High School WASL this spring. Some members of the class of 2009 took the High School WASL in ninth grade: they may not have taken sections of the test they passed last year.

In order to earn a high school diploma, the class of 2009 is required to pass the reading and writing sections of the WASL. They must also pass the math section of the WASL or pass an approved alternative or must earn two mathematics credits after their 10th grade year and continue to take the WASL at least once annually until graduation.

WASL Scores are divided into four levels. Level 1 and Level 2 do not meet the standard to pass the WASL. Level 3 and Level 4 do meet the standard and count toward the graduation requirement.

For Lake Washington School District, the preliminary results are listed in the box below. Students who received no score are not included. Each district must review records for these students before their actual results can be determined. Students who were ill or who moved out of the district, for example, would have a test booklet generated and would receive no score, even though they never took the test.

 Preliminary #s  LEVEL 1  LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4

WRITING 24 59 360 1047
MATHEMATICS 179 235 621 528

“I’m encouraged by these scores, though we still have students who will need extra help,” noted Chief Academic Officer Dan Phelan. “These results appear to be slightly higher than last year’s. For this class, as with the class of 2008, we will make every effort to help every student graduate.”

The district will offer summer school classes for students who need additional help as well as additional programs during the school year.

Lake Washington School District is the sixth largest district in the state of Washington. It has over 23,000 students in 48 schools located in Kirkland, Redmond, and Sammamish, Washington.
