FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Redmond, Wash. – Three additional Lake Washington School District students will receive National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarships financed by the college or university they plan to attend. These students are among the 2,000 students nationwide who join over 2,800 other college-sponsored award recipients announced in late May. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced these additional award recipients on Monday, July 13.
The following students will receive these scholarships:
- Carl Walsh, Lake Washington High School - Harvey Mudd College
- Gail Parsons, Redmond High School - University of Central Florida
- Emily Chen, International Community School – University of Chicago
The four Lake Washington School District students who were announced as winners of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships in May were:
- Patrick Gilbery, Juanita High School – Arizona State University
- Ashoat Tevosyan, Redmond High School – University of Washington
- Elizabeth Nelson, Redmond High School – University of Washington
- Ashton Hemphill, Eastlake High School – University of Washington
Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
Students qualified for these awards by completing the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. About 15,000 semi-finalists attained Finalist standing, and more than half of this group was selected to receive National Merit Scholarships.
