Redmond, Wash. – At its January 7 meeting, the Lake Washington School District Elementary Math Adoption Committee completed its initial evaluation of 11 elementary math programs and prioritized four programs that will continue as finalists. The finalists are:
- Bridges In Mathematics Publisher: The Math Learning Center, Copyright 2008
- enVision Math Publisher: Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley, Copyright 2011
- Math Connects Publisher: MacMillan-McGraw-Hill, Copyright 2009
- Math Expressions Publisher: Houghton Mifflin-Harcourt, Copyright 2009
The district is asking parents to weigh in with their opinions of these four options. During the month of January, parents will have a chance to review the top four elementary math curricula options, at four informational meetings. One meeting will be held in each learning community, which is made up of the neighborhoods that feed into each of the four comprehensive high schools (Eastlake, Juanita, Lake Washington and Redmond). These meetings will include a presentation about the math curriculum review process, highlights of the top curricula, and an opportunity for parents to review the curricula and complete input forms.
The dates, times and locations of the meetings are:
- Lake Washington Learning Community: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Rose Hill Junior High, 7 p.m.
- Eastlake Learning Community: Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Eastlake High School, 7 p.m.
- Redmond Learning Community: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Redmond High School, 7 p.m.
- Juanita Learning Community: Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Frost Elementary School, 7 p.m.
Parents who cannot make it to one of the four meetings will have other opportunities to weigh in. The four programs also will be on display for parent review and input in the District Resource Center between January 11 and 29, 2010. The Resource Center is located at 16250 NE 74th St., in Redmond Town Center. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
In addition, information on the four curriculum options has been posted on the district Web site, with a link to an online survey. Parents may review the material and provide input from home via the Web.
When the committee reconvenes in February, they will continue the curriculum evaluation process to narrow the choices to two programs for piloting.
The 43-member Committee consists of representatives from all elementary schools and district programs. Program representation includes Preschool, English Language Learner, General Education, Special Education, Safety Net and Gifted. Administrator representation includes three district-level administrators and seven elementary principals. Math Content and Technology Integration Specialists are also included.
