Plateau Boundary Committee Selects Three Draft Scenarios

Open house to collect parent input set for January 10 at Inglewood Jr.

Draft Scenario Survey Results

The Lake Washington School District committee charged with developing proposed new boundaries for elementary schools on the Sammamish plateau selected three draft boundary scenarios for further consideration. The selection was based on five criteria for the new boundaries as well as the input from over 600 parents and community members who took a web-based survey on six initial scenarios. The three scenarios selected were those labeled Scenario A, Scenario C and Scenario D in the original list of six.

“We received quite a bit of community feedback,” noted committee chair Dr. Cindy Lundvall. “One scenario was more popular than any of the others and two were clearly not acceptable based on survey results and written comments. The three scenarios in the middle all had their pros and cons.”

Scenario C was the highest rated by parents, with more parents agreeing that it met the five criteria than any other scenario. Scenario D had the next highest rating. Both Scenarios C and D have five instances when a school is predicted to be over capacity by one classroom. Scenario A was one of two scenarios that essentially tied in their ranking by parents but it has the fewest instances in which a school is predicted to go over capacity.

The next step in the process is a public open house in which all interested parents can view detailed maps of the three scenarios and provide input on each of the three as well as their preference. Committee members will be available to answer questions and gather parent opinions.

The open house will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, at the Inglewood Junior High cafeteria. Parents can arrive any time during that two-hour period.

The committee received quite a few suggestions on potential adjustments to each of these scenarios. It is anticipated that additional input will be received at the community open house. After the open house, the committee expects to narrow down the choices further and make any indicated adjustments. There will be an additional opportunity for community input via the district Web site at that point, before the committee is expected to make its preferred scenario recommendation to the superintendent.

In addition, the district has prepared a set of questions and answers to respond to some of the questions and comments received by the boundary committee.
