The Sammamish Plateau elementary school boundary change committee has developed six draft criteria to use in judging different sets of potential boundaries for the area’s elementary schools. These criteria are based on the committee’s charge, which in turn is based on district policy. Specifically, in the district’s governance policies, the superintendent is charged to:
“recommend for Board approval school attendance boundaries that consider the impacts on families’ continuity with their school and community, and are appropriate to the effective and efficient operation of the district.”*
Superintendent Kimball, in turn, had charged this committee with providing him with recommendations that match that charge.
The draft criteria developed by the committee are:
- Minimize the number of students and families affected
- Maintain neighborhoods to the extent possible
- Redistribute enrollment to match school capacity and to accommodate growth
- Utilize natural boundaries to the extent possible
- Minimize transportation impacts
- Provide proximity of Special Programs to the extent possible
The committee is seeking public comment on these criteria, especially from parents of elementary school children, current and future, who live on the Sammamish Plateau. A web survey has been created to gather opinion about the draft set of criteria and to solicit any other criteria that should be considered.
