Ground broken for new elementary in North Redmond
Ground was broken on May 24 for the first of three new schools in Lake Washington School District (LWSD). These schools are part of the district’s overall Building on Success program, which is funded by the $398 million bond approved by voters in April 2016. The new buildings will help the district address its rapidly growing enrollment. LWSD is now the third largest district in the state, with just over 29,000 students.
“This is a very exciting time in Lake Washington School District,” noted Dr. Traci Pierce, superintendent, who addressed the crowd. “We are growing. We are thriving. We are succeeding and we are building on that success.”
Dr. Pierce introduced Karen Barker, who will serve as the school’s first principal when it opens in September 2018. Barker is currently the principal of Dickinson Elementary School and Explorer Community School, also in Redmond.

Community input
As part of the Schematic Design phase, a community meeting was held at Redmond High School on June 14. This open-house style meeting gave parents and other community members a chance to view the preliminary designs for the new elementary school and the new middle school to be built in Redmond Ridge. They viewed presentation boards that showed the project schedule, site plan, building plan and views to show what the school will look like. Staff from the architecture firms working on the projects were available to answer questions and get feedback. Attendees provided written feedback on these initial designs.
Two additional community meetings were held as part of the Design Development phase. A meeting was held at Redmond City Hall on September 22 in conjunction with the City of Redmond. At that meeting, Forrest Miller, Director, Support Services, presented the updated designs for the school. Attendees were able to ask questions about the project, as well as to submit written comments.
A final community meeting was held on September 27 at Redmond High School to get additional input. This time, the plans and designs reflected the input from community members from the June meeting. Each board listed the specific changes made in response to the input. Attendees also provided additional written feedback into this second round of designs.
