National Board Certified Teachers

Kudos to National Board Certified Teachers, Lake Washington School District’s “Staff Stars” for February 2011.

Lake Washington School District learned in December that 30 teachers met the challenge of achieving National Board Certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Teachers earn this prestigious credential through a rigorous assessment that generally takes a year or more to complete. It requires these teachers to demonstrate how their work improves student achievement. As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers are assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach. It is considered the highest professional certification a teacher can obtain.

Here is how the process of achieving National Board Certification has benefited our new National Board Certified teachers:

  • “I have taught all areas of Visual Art and Art History for the past 30+ years. This was an opportunity to refresh my craft.” - Kathy Hargrave, teacher, Eastlake High School.
  • “Even after 35 years in public education, the National Board Certification process made me look at my teaching in a different way. Examining video tapes of teaching for defendable practice was enlightening! I also liked the way it made me use research on best practice to refine my skills.” - Nancy Pfaff, teacher, Horace Mann Elementary.
  • “National board certification has affected the way I teach through meaningful reflecting on my teaching craft. The national board process really forced me to answer many of the decisions I make in a teaching day: What are my learning goals for the lesson? What are my learning goals for the entire unit? Were they achieved? How do I know? What were some critical moments in your lesson?” - David Peabody, teacher, Redmond High School.
  • “National Boards has caused me to rethink what I am teaching and why I am teaching it. It also taught me to examine what it is that I am doing that is making a difference in what the kids are learning and how do I know they are truly meeting my objectives.” - Eric Lucke, teacher, Finn Hill Junior High.

More information about the National Board Certification process is available on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website.
