Chris Broderick, ASB/Leadership and PE Teacher, Redmond Junior High
Kudos to Chris Broderick, Lake Washington School District’s “Staff Star” for December 2009.
Chris Broderick, the ASB/Leadership teacher at Redmond Junior High has challenged his students to take their program to new heights by encouraging them to explore every idea that they have and to see their ideas through to completion.
During his leadership, students have taken on immense challenges and have succeeded at every turn. Here are just some of their accomplishments from last year:
- Increased student and staff participation in Redmond Junior High’s annual magazine drive, generating nearly $70,000 – even with the down economy.
- Increased the quality and participation of students in various assemblies that were entirely student produced and run. Examples include amazing assemblies for Veteran’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
- Increased the participation of students in various dances by creating fun themes. They generated posters, signs and decorations that encouraged student participation.
- Organized and successfully executed a beautiful end of year “Touch of Class” assembly for outgoing ninth graders. Also coordinated a very successful ninth grade Boat Dance celebration.
- Led a variety of school activities in support of student Levi Pocza after he suffered cardiac arrest during PE class. Chris was one of five staff members from Redmond Junior High that worked to save Levi’s life.
- Supported student participation in a canned food drive, coat drive and gift card drive.
- Helped create and staff a new program with Sodexho to have student athletes serve lunch during the day to create a new revenue stream for the ASB budget.
- Participated and acted as hosts/guides during parent events such as Curriculum Night and the Sixth Grade Parent Night. At the Sixth Grade Parent Night, leadership students participated in a panel and discussed student-related issues with incoming parents.
- Increased student participation in student representative meetings and have acted on a variety of issues around the school to improve the quality of the school and facility such as improvements to hall clocks, shelving in bathrooms, dugout roofs, replacing equipment and more.
- Facilitated a mock student presidential election with the Social Studies teachers in which the entire school participated.
Chris admits that he sometimes has to rein his students back in when their ideas get too large – after all, many of the students in his leadership class are already challenging themselves by taking advanced classes at Redmond High School in the morning and participating in a number of after school activities and clubs, in addition to maintaining high grades.
For challenging his students and encouraging them to think outside of the box, Chris Broderick truly is a “Staff Star.”
