The Lake Washington School District affirms the authority of the United States Constitution and the Washington State Constitution in guaranteeing to all citizens the right to free exercise of religion and the right to be free of sectarian control or influence. Lake Washington School District offices and schools shall encourage an atmosphere of mutual respect, understanding, and appreciation for all members of the school community and for the diversity of cultural, economic, racial, and religious backgrounds. Religious beliefs or non-beliefs shall not be promoted or disparaged in schools or school activities. Religion and religious movements, thoughts, and tenets are a part of our social and political history and our literary and cultural heritage. Student awareness and knowledge of the contribution of religion in such disciplines as art, music, literature, history, and social studies may be developed through instruction that is factual, neutral, and objective.
