Administrative policies focus on day-to-day operations

When most people think about a school district’s policies, they are probably thinking about one of the policies in this section. You might be searching for the district’s policies about student conduct, about purchasing, or advertising in the schools, for example. This section is where you will find those more detailed policies that guide the district’s day-to-day operations.

The administrative policies are divided into 11 sections here, organized using the classification system developed by the Educational Policies Service of the National School Boards Association. You will see the Reference Codes in parentheses after each section. But you don’t need to know the system or the codes: click on the header for a section that looks promising and you will go to a page that lists the policies in that section. Or use the search function to find the best match.

Foundations and basic commitments (Reference Code A)
This section is where you will find statements about the district's legal role in providing public education and the underlying principles on which the district operates. The policies in this section provide a setting for all of the school board's other policies.
General school administration (Reference Code C)
This section includes policies about the school district management, the administrative structure, and school building and department administration. You will find the personnel policies that pertain to one individual--the superintendent. See the Personnel section below for all other personnel policies.
Fiscal management (Reference Code D)
These policies cover district fiscal affairs and the management of district funds. Statements relating to the financing of school construction, however, are filed in the Facilities Development section.
Support services (Reference Code E)
Policies in this section govern non-instructional services and programs, including most of these that fall in the area of business management such as safety, buildings and their management (not construction), transportation, and food services.
Facilities development (Reference Code F)
These policies concern school construction, remodeling and modernizing, temporary facilities, and facilities retirement plans.
Personnel (Reference Code G)
This section covers personnel policies in three main subdivisions. The first presents policy topics that pertain to all employees. The second section focuses on policies that pertain to professional personnel, including administrators, who must hold educational certification by the state to serve in their positions. The last section is for policies pertaining to all other personnel.
Negotiations (Reference Code H)
These policies pertain to the process of negotiating with staff units recognized by the school board.
Instruction (Reference Code I)
You will find policies on the instructional program here: basic programs, special programs, activities programs, instructional resources, and academic achievement.
Students (Reference Code J)
Policies concerning students are found here--admissions, attendance, rights and responsibilities, conduct, discipline, health and welfare services. However, all policies pertaining to the curriculum, instruction of students, and extracurricular programs are filed in the Instruction section.
School-community relations (Reference Code K)
Policies in this section include those that affect relations with the general public and with other community and public agencies except other educational agencies and groups.
Education agency relations (Reference Code L)
This section governs the district's relationship with other education agencies--other school districts, regional or service districts, private Schools, colleges and universities, educational research organizations, and state and national education agencies.
